The Oviedo Police Department needs your help in organizing a crime and drug prevention event in your Oviedo neighborhood in support of the 27th Annual National Night Out Program. National Night Out will be held on August 3, 2010. Leaders in the community like yourself are invited to an organizational meeting on May 24th at the COPS and Volunteer Center at the Oviedo Marketplace Mall (next to Dillards). The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss how to organize an event, to share information about successful National Night Out events carried out in Oviedo last year, and to explain how the police department can help you organize.
National Night Out is designed to: heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime efforts; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. Events last year ranged from all the neighbors on a street meeting in a front yard to ice cream socials, parades, bounce houses and barbecues. Events ranged in size from a handful to several hundred people. Last year over 1000 people attended local events in Oviedo. That’s about one in every 32 residents in the City. Together we can increase that number this year. Police officers and firefighters will be attending National Night Out events throughout the evening on August 3rd.
Those who attended last years neighborhood events will remember the excitement of neighbors meeting neighbors, many for the first time. Many of the events included activities for children that ranged from pool parties to face painting to bounce houses to free ice cream.
To start organizing your neighborhood for “National Night Out”, join us May 24th, 2010 from 6:30 – 8:30pm at the Oviedo COPS and Volunteer Center in the Oviedo Market Place Mall (next to Dillard’s) Two follow up meetings will be held on June 28th and July 26th.
