Oviedo Crime Alert on Mail Thefts
|
|
Between December 9th thru 14th mail was stolen from 10 different victims in the Sanctuary and Little Creek Subdivisons. All mail taken was from mailboxes with the pick up flag left up overnight
Anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the affected subdivisions should contact the Oviedo Police Department at 407-971-5711 or CrimeLine at 1-800-423-TIPS.
Nationally the theft of mail from residential mailboxes is an increasing problem. Con artists use this as a means to obtain your identity information and to steal checks and other items of value. This problem can be reduced or minimized by following these tips:
o Do not leave outgoing mail in your unlocked mailbox.
o Deposit mail in a blue collection box or inside your local post office. Don't leave mail in a collection box that is full.
o Make sure your home mailbox is in good condition. Mail that is exposed can be damaged by bad weather and is visible to thieves.
o Promptly pick up your incoming mail after it is delivered.
o Get together with neighbors and the Postal Service and arrange for the installation of locked group mailboxes for neighborhood delivery. These are known as Neighborhood Delivery & Collection Box Units (NDCBU). Each address has an individual locked unit for delivery and collection. A minimum of seven neighbors is needed to sign a petition requesting an NDCBU.
o Purchase a locked mailbox or convert your unlocked box to the lockable type. Make sure the mail slot is large enough for the letter carrier to insert your mail. The letter carrier cannot pick up mail from this type of box.
o Arrange for your mail to be delivered to a Post Office box for a small fee.
o Have regular income checks deposited electronically into your bank account via direct deposit.
o Promptly contact the senders if you do not receive credit cards, checks, or other valuable mail.
o Notify the post office and mailers if you change your address. When going on vacation, have the post office hold your mail or have a trusted friend or neighbor pick up your mail after delivery.
o Be observant of activities on your street, including those near your letter carrier, the postal vehicle, residential mailboxes, and collection boxes.
o If you see suspicious persons or activity, call 911 while the suspects are still present.
By following these tips and using common sense, you can lessen your chances of being a victim of mail theft and possible identity theft. If you have questions about postal regulations, contact your local postmaster.

Fraudulent H1N1 Swine Flu Registration E-Mail Alert
|
|
Importance: High
The CDC/OCISO Cyber Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) has received reports of fraudulent emails (phishing) referencing a CDC sponsored State Vaccination Program. The messages request that users must create a personal H1N1 (swine flu) Vaccination Profile on the cdc.gov website. The message then states that anyone that has reached the age of 18 has to have his/her personal Vaccination Profile on the cdc.gov site.
The CDC has NOT implemented a state vaccination program requiring registration on www.cdc.gov. Users that click on the email are at risk of having malicious code installed on their system.

To Whom It May Concern,
According to the American Cancer Society, the nationwide estimation for cancer deaths is 565,650 deaths. The American Cancer Society is trying to lower this number by raising money to fund research and support programs for cancer patients. One of the American Cancer Society’s larger fundraising events is Relay for Life. The Oviedo Relay for Life will take place at Lawton Chiles Middle School on March 26, 2010 beginning at 6:00 p.m.
Please help the City of Oviedo support the American Cancer Society with a tax deductible donation in the form of cash, gift certificate or merchandise. Gift certificates or merchandise will be raffled off during fundraisers held by the City of Oviedo Team to benefit the American Cancer Society. If any part of your cash donation totals $250.00 or more, your company name and logo will be placed on the back of our team’s t-shirt. Please make checks payable to American Cancer Society. Credit card donations may also be made online at Relay for Life Oviedo; team name City of Oviedo.
Most people know of at least one person who has cancer; who has survived cancer; or someone who unfortunately has succumbed to this widespread disease. Please help us help the American Cancer Society raise money for research of new treatments, as well as provide services to cancer patients to make their lives and their treatments more manageable.
Your support is greatly appreciated.
